A nameless feeling—uncertain, unstable, existing somewhere in between.
It does not arrive suddenly. It comes slowly.
Sometimes, when I look through the viewfinder, the edges of things begin to blur, and my sense of time seems to fade.
A sensation that the reality before me and my memories are overlapping.
As if a distant presence can be heard.
Not a voice, not a sound.
More like an afterimage lingering, refusing to disappear.

Memory remains in light.

The more I try to pursue it, the further it drifts away.
And when I reach out to touch it, it seems to lose its shape.

Boundaries are always quiet.

The moment between night and morning.
The space between reality and dreams.
The distance between the past and the present.

The in-between, leading to yet another in-between.

Simply drifting, on a journey that never quite arrives.
Before the trembling light disappears, I release the shutter once more.
I once believed I photographed people because I was drawn to them.

Yet there was a time when I no longer wanted to hold people within the frame.
The landscapes that caught my attention began to change, and the photographs that emerged seemed to linger in a world between worlds.
Looking back, I feel they were always there—waiting in that space in between.

LIMINAL

July 1–15, 2026
Photographer Akira Yamada presents LIMINAL at DAIKANYAMA TSUTAYA BOOKS.

This exhibition features LIMINAL, a photographic series that Yamada has been developing over recent years.

Not a voice. Not a sound.
More like an afterimage lingering, refusing to disappear.

The more I try to pursue it, the further it drifts away.

The distance between the past and the present.
The in-between, leading to yet another in-between.
Simply drifting, on a journey that never quite arrives.
Before the trembling light disappears, I release the shutter once more.
I once believed I photographed people because I was drawn to them.
Yet there was a period when I found myself stepping away from photographing people altogether.
The landscapes that caught my attention began to change, and the photographs that emerged seemed to linger in a world between worlds.
Looking back, perhaps they had always been there.
Waiting quietly in that liminal space.

On July 2, photographer Akira Yamada will be joined by fashion journalist and former Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Japan, Mitsuko Watanabe, and Kiyo Fujishiro, publisher and editor of The Eastern Observer, Like the Wind Japan, and Jupiter Publishing, for a special talk session.

Together, we will discuss the act of making work, sustaining a creative practice, and what it means to create and communicate through images.

People gather and cross paths within the space of a bookstore.
We hope you will experience the subtle movements between one moment and the next, and feel the presence of the spaces in between.
