BITTERSWEET — Artist Statement

Bittersweet explores the coexistence of emotions that seem to contradict one another. The sweet and the unsettling, comfort and loneliness, innocence and unease.

My work is influenced by childhood memories, toys, nostalgia, and the complicated emotions that can exist beneath things that initially appear cute or familiar. Through my characters Arichan and Okkun, I use color, form, and character design to give physical shape to feelings that can otherwise be difficult to express. Arichan is my modern interpretation of the Japanese rokurokubi. Her bows, dresses, soft colors, and doll-like appearance evoke innocence and familiarity, while her elongated neck, fangs, and unusual expressions introduce something strange and slightly unsettling. Each Arichan carries a different personality and mood, reflecting the many emotions and identities that can exist within a single character.

Okkun is an alien whose color changes according to his emotions. While his feelings are impossible to completely hide, he usually wears a paper bag over his head as a way of concealing himself from the world. This contradiction wanting to hide while involuntarily revealing what he feels is central to Okkun’s character. Through him, emotions that are normally kept inside become visible on the outside, transforming feeling into color.

Together, Arichan and Okkun inhabit the world of Bittersweet: a place that is playful and nostalgic, yet strange, vulnerable, and sometimes melancholic.
Memories and emotions are rarely entirely happy or entirely sad. Something can be beautiful and painful, comforting and unfamiliar, sweet and bitter all at once.

Arisa Adams is a Japanese-American multidisciplinary artist born in Tokyo and raised in Las Vegas. Working across sculpture, painting, character design, and art toys, her practice draws from childhood memories, nostalgia, femininity, and Japanese visual culture, often combining playful and familiar imagery with elements of the strange and unexpected.

Adams studied visual arts with a focus on painting and sculpture before attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), where she studied painting and performance. She later returned to Japan, where she worked in modeling and entertainment with Oscar Promotion and appeared on NHK, experiences that further shaped her relationship with Japanese culture and visual expression.
Now focusing primarily on her art practice, Adams creates original characters including Arichan, a contemporary interpretation of the Japanese rokurokubi, and Okkun, an alien whose changing colors reflect his emotions. Through hand-painted sofubi, resin sculpture, painting, and mixed media, she creates a world in which cuteness, nostalgia, humor, and uneasiness coexist.
Her work explores character as a form of emotional storytelling, existing somewhere between fine art, sculpture, and the visual language of toys.
